Marriage/Wedding & Civil Union

Until July 2002, when the Civil code of Quebec was finally amended, heterosexual couples had only the following choice: to whether live together as concubines de facto with very limited rights, or to marry. As for homosexual couples, they just could not marry as the government had until then refused to listen to the different requests arising from the gay and lesbian community.

Notaries have been empowered to marry couples as wedding officials. Montreal, Quebec has since became a popular place for the celebration of marriage (wedding) by a notary. Indeed, Quebec law now entitles notaries to solemnize the marriage between any two persons, whether they are of the same or different sex and whether they are Canadians or not. Couples can now choose between the celebration of a marriage or of a civil union. Different formalities must be previously observed in order for the celebration of a marriage or civil union to be recognized by the authorities. We are very experienced with these various formalities and we are always very happy to take care of it for you.
